Yumnam Khemchand Singh on Wednesday met President Droupadi Murmu at Rashtrapati Bhavan and briefed her on the evolving situation in the strife-hit northeastern state.

The meeting comes against the backdrop of prolonged ethnic unrest in Manipur, which has witnessed violence between Meitei and Kuki-Zo communities since May 2023, leaving over 260 people dead and thousands displaced.

In a post on X, the Chief Minister said he apprised the President of the “coordinated response” being undertaken to address the challenges on the ground. “Reiterated that unity, harmony, and peace remain our guiding principles,” he said.

Later, in a Facebook post, Singh said discussions focused on restoring peace, stability and normalcy in the state. “I had the privilege of apprising Her Excellency of the evolving situation… and the calibrated and coordinated response being undertaken,” he added.

Singh assumed office as the 13th Chief Minister of Manipur on February 4, nearly a year after the resignation of his predecessor N Biren Singh amid escalating violence, which had led to the imposition of President’s Rule.

In recent weeks, the state government has initiated efforts to revive dialogue, holding talks with representatives of the Kuki Zo Council in Guwahati, the first such engagement in nearly three years, to rebuild trust between communities.

Sources said Singh is also expected to meet senior party leaders in New Delhi to discuss a possible expansion of the state cabinet.

In separate developments, Bihar Governor Syed Ata Hasnain and Nagaland Governor Nand Kishore Yadav also called on the President at Rashtrapati Bhavan earlier in the day.

The Centre has maintained that restoring normalcy in Manipur remains a priority, with continued engagement at both political and administrative levels.
