The Manipur government has constituted a dedicated Highway Patrol Team to enhance safety and security along the 220-km Imphal–Jiribam stretch of National Highway 37, aiming to curb extortion, improve road conditions and ensure uninterrupted traffic movement.
The team has been formed under the direction of Noney Deputy Commissioner Vidhyamari Sridhar and includes an Executive Magistrate, personnel from the Manipur Police, Central Armed Police Forces (CAPFs), officials of the National Highways & Infrastructure Development Corporation Limited, and representatives of agencies responsible for construction and maintenance of the highway.
According to the District Information Office in Noney, the patrol team will conduct regular inspections and surveillance along the highway to prevent extortion, address commuter concerns, and monitor the quality and progress of ongoing maintenance work. The initiative also seeks to improve coordination among departments involved in highway management.
Officials said the move is intended to ensure swift resolution of issues that may disrupt traffic and to maintain safe and smooth vehicular movement. The district administration has emphasised that ensuring the safety of commuters on NH-37 remains a top priority.
Authorities have directed all departments and implementing agencies to work in close coordination to maintain law and order, upgrade road infrastructure and provide a secure travel environment.
The Deputy Commissioner has appealed to transporters, commercial vehicle operators and the public to cooperate with the patrol team and report incidents of extortion, intimidation or other unlawful activities to the nearest authorities.
The administration reiterated its commitment to making NH-37 a reliable and efficient transport corridor linking different parts of the state.
Movement along the highway has faced disruptions in recent years due to ongoing conflict in the region, with authorities often providing security escorts to goods and passenger vehicles. The newly formed patrol team is expected to strengthen confidence among commuters and improve connectivity along this crucial route.
