Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann on Wednesday said he would meet President Droupadi Murmu on May 5 regarding the merger of seven AAP Rajya Sabha MPs with the BJP.
The Chief Minister had earlier requested an appointment with the President and planned to meet her along with party MLAs to seek the “recall” of the state’s Rajya Sabha MPs who joined the BJP. “The President has given time at 12 noon on May 5, and I will definitely meet her,” Mann told mediapersons in Chandigarh.
When asked whether there is any legal provision to recall a legislator, the Chief Minister said he would discuss the matter directly with the President during the meeting.
On April 24, the Aam Aadmi Party faced a major setback when seven of its 10 Rajya Sabha MPs — Raghav Chadha, Ashok Mittal, Sandeep Pathak, Harbhajan Singh, Rajendra Gupta, Vikramjit Sahney and Swati Maliwal — resigned from the party and joined the BJP. They alleged that AAP had moved away from its founding principles, values and core ideology.
Out of the seven MPs who quit AAP, six were representing Punjab in the Rajya Sabha.
Rajya Sabha Chairman C P Radhakrishnan on Monday formally accepted the merger of the MPs with the BJP. The move reduced the strength of Arvind Kejriwal-led party in the Upper House to three members.
