The Shri Lal Bahadur Shastri Government Medical College and Hospital, Nerchowk, has suspended two MBBS students for ragging and assaulting a junior student. The complainant has also been penalised after a investigation findings revealed that he attempted to extract money from the accused seniors by misusing anti-ragging provisions.
As per official sources, the action followed a fact-finding inquiry conducted by a committee formed by the college administration.
The inquiry was based on a complaint filed on December 19, 2025, by Shubham Singh, a second-year MBBS student of the 2024 batch. He alleged that his seniors, Harsh and Prashant Jha, both fourth-year students, assaulted him in his hostel room of the college on December 18.
After receiving the complaint, the college approached the Station House Officer of Balh police station and began an internal investigation. The findings were later placed before the anti-ragging committee of the college.
Based on statements from the complainant, accused students and witnesses, the panel confirmed that the two seniors had confessed to assaulting the junior student and were guilty of ragging-related misconduct.
However, the panel also found that the complainant acted with mala fide intent. The probe found that he had earlier tried to extort money from the seniors to settle the matter and had misused provisions of the Anti-Ragging Act.
It was also reported that both accused students were habitual offenders and had been suspended earlier as well.
Confirming the action, Principal Dr DK Verma said the college followed a zero-tolerance policy on indiscipline. “Harsh and Prashant have been suspended for three months, expelled from the hostel for one year and fined Rs 20,000,” he said.
Dr Verma further said that disciplinary action was also taken against the complainant. “Shubham has been expelled from the hostel for six weeks and fined Rs 10,000,” he said.
The college administration reaffirmed its commitment to maintaining discipline and ensuring a safe academic environment.
