Meghalaya has turned to competitive sailing as part of a broader push to position Umiam Lake as a key sports tourism hub, hosting back-to-back events that drew over 280 participants, including international sailors.
Over a ten-day period, the reservoir near Shillong staged two major competitions, the inaugural Indian Sailing League (ISL) and the 4th North East Regatta, marking one of the most ambitious efforts by the state to build a presence in India’s emerging water sports landscape.
The ISL, a franchise-based competition, featured 182 sailors, including 58 international participants from countries such as Russia, Korea, Malaysia and Sri Lanka. Fourteen teams competed across Olympic and youth categories, with a prize pool exceeding ₹1.5 crore, making it one of the largest sailing events held in the country.
The momentum continued with the North East Regatta, organised in collaboration with the Yachting Association of India, which attracted over 100 participants. The regatta also served as a ranking event and a qualifying platform for national squads preparing for competitions such as the Asian Games.
Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma linked the events to a wider development vision for Umiam. “We want to tell everybody that Meghalaya has arrived. We are ready, and every activity we do is building up on that larger goal and purpose that we had in front of us,” he said.

Officials described the initiative as part of a shift towards experience-led tourism, aimed at attracting high-value visitors and encouraging longer stays. Infrastructure development, including facilities at the Orchid Water Sports Complex, has been central to this strategy, alongside plans to align with national and international sporting calendars.
The events were organised through partnerships with the Umiam Sailing Club and the United De Novo Association of Yachting (UDAY), with organisers highlighting strong administrative and logistical support from the state government.
The efforts have drawn attention from the sailing community. Admiral Karambir Singh, president of the Yachting Association of India, said the level of state support was unmatched and noted the rapid emergence of Umiam as a premier sailing venue.
On the competition front, Bhopal Tritons won the ISL, followed by Vizag Vikings, while Shillong Umiam Navigators secured a podium finish. The regatta also saw participation from international sailors, signalling growing global interest.
Officials see the events as part of preparations for the 2027 National Games and India’s broader Olympic ambitions, with Umiam being developed as a long-term sports tourism destination.
