People’s Democratic Party (PDP) chief Mehbooba Mufti on Saturday said stern action should be taken against drug peddlers, but innocent families should not be punished through demolition of their homes.

During a party convention in central Kashmir’s Budgam district, the former chief minister said those involved in drug trafficking must be jailed. However, she questioned why families were being made to suffer. Mufti also asked why action was not taken against police personnel allegedly releasing accused persons after taking bribes. “What is the fault of family members? Demolishing houses is not justice,” she said.

She criticised Chief Minister Omar Abdullah over the ongoing action, saying people had voted for his government expecting protection and fairness. “If people wanted bulldozer politics, they would not have elected you,” she said.

"I will not name the person who messaged me at midnight last night. That person said the LG is organising Nasha Mukt Abhjiyaan event in Anantnag, but all employees and schools, including women and girls, have been directed to arrive at 6:30 am. I want to tell the LG that the campaign is a good initiative, but... making them wait, I think, is an excess," she said.

Mehbooba also accused the government of widespread corruption. She alleged that deserving youth were being denied opportunities while recruitment was influenced by political favouritism.
