The Kashmir Valley finally saw a change in weather on Saturday after months of a prolonged dry spell that resulted in a 62 per cent rainfall deficit in 2026. While the plains experienced partly cloudy conditions, fresh snowfall blanketed the upper reaches, particularly in north Kashmir.
The fresh snowfall forced authorities to suspend vehicular movement on the inter-district road connecting Bandipora and Gurez, a route that typically receives heavy seasonal snowfall. Due to safety concerns and slippery road conditions, all traffic between the two districts was halted.
A moderate to strong western disturbance is expected to impact Jammu and Kashmir over the next 48 hors, bringing widespread rain and snowfall across the region between March 9 and March 12.
According to the forecast, J&K will see generally cloudy skies with light rain and snow over higher reaches at scattered places. Moderate snowfall is likely in several higher reaches of North Kashmir’s Kupwara and Bandipora districts, Central Kashmir’s Ganderbal, and South Kashmir’s Anantnag.
Cloud cover is expected to persist from March 13 to March 15, with chances of rain and snow at isolated locations. Thereafter, generally cloudy conditions with light rain or snow (mainly in higher reaches) at isolated places are predicted between March 17 and March 19.
The updated forecast comes a day after MeT Director Srinagar Mukhtar Ahmad Dar had predicted continued dry weather across Jammu and Kashmir until March 18, with only a possibility of light rain and snowfall on March 11 and March 12.
