Security forces on Saturday successfully defused a live mortar shell discovered in a forward village near the Line of Control (LoC) in Jammu and Kashmir’s Poonch district, officials said.
A border resident first spotted the unexploded mortar shell lying in a secluded area of Brari village in the Sawjian sector and immediately alerted security forces. An army unit, accompanied by personnel from the local post, rushed to the site and cordoned off the area.
A bomb disposal squad was then deployed, and the shell was safely neutralised without causing any damage to nearby infrastructure or injury to personnel.
According to officials, the mortar shell was likely fired from across the border during the brief India-Pakistan conflict in May 2025 and had remained buried or undetected since then.
Such unexploded ordnance poses a significant risk to civilian life, property, and livestock if not identified and defused in time. Recovery of mortar shells and other unexploded munitions in forward areas along the LoC is not uncommon, as items fired during past ceasefire violations often lie dormant for extended periods before being discovered.
Security forces and bomb disposal teams are routinely called upon to secure these sites and safely dispose of the devices to prevent accidents.
