As Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann opposed the scrapping of MGNREGA, the BJP on Wednesday alleged that his government failed to provide the legally mandated 100 days of work to lakhs of poor people in the state over the past nearly four years.
Addressing a press conference in Chandigarh, Ashwani Sharma, working president of the BJP’s Punjab unit, alleged that corruption under MGNREGA was widespread. He accused AAP leaders and MLAs of being involved in the corruption and questioned why no action was taken in over 10,600 corruption cases reportedly flagged by the Special Audit Unit.
Sharma said the Mann government had denied workers, Dalit families and people from weaker sections their rightful livelihood, hurting their dignity and self-respect.
He alleged that Mann was deliberately not acting against those involved in corruption and was instead protecting leaders of his own party.
Sharma said that even when the Centre releases funds for providing 100 days of employment to workers in Punjab, the state government failed to ensure full employment on the ground.
He questioned why workers were being denied their guaranteed work under the scheme. The BJP leader also alleged that mandatory social audits under MGNREGA were not carried out in 6,095 gram panchayats in 2024–25 and 7,389 gram panchayats in 2025–26.
Sharma said workers’ organisations have repeatedly accused AAP MLAs, MPs and local leaders of corruption. He claimed that continued inaction by the government has allowed the poor to be deprived of their livelihood through corruption in MGNREGA.
