Srinagar recorded its first sub-zero night of the season as the minimum temperature at most of the weather stations plummeted below the freezing point, officials said on Monday.
The city recorded a minimum temperature of minus 0.1 degrees Celsius on Sunday night, Meteorological officials said. It was the first sub-zero temperature as well as the coldest night of the season so far.
The night temperature in Srinagar was two degrees below the seasonal average for this time of the year.
Except for Kokernag, a popular tourist spot in South Kashmir, which recorded a minimum of 1.4 degrees Celsius, all other weather stations across the Kashmir Valley recorded sub-zero night temperatures, the Met officials said.
Pahalgam recorded a minimum of minus 3.2 degrees Celsius, while Gulmarg recorded minus 0.2 degrees Celsius, they said. Qazigund, the gateway town to the Valley, recorded minus 0.9 degrees Celsius, while Kupwara in north Kashmir recorded minus 1.2 degrees Celsius.
The MeT Department has forecast mainly dry weather across Kashmir till November 15. It also said night temperatures may further fall in the coming days.
Meanwhile, a majority of popular hill stations across the Kashmir Valley witnessed the season’s first snowfall last week. The Jammu and Kashmir government, along with stakeholders, including those indirectly connected with the tourism sector, have pinned their hopes on the winter season to revive tourism in the Union Territory following the Pahalgam attack.
