A 17-year-old intermediate student in Nalanda died by suicide on Friday, 12 hours after she was allegedly raped at gunpoint in her home, police said.

The incident took place in a village under the Nalanda police station. According to family members, the girl, who had recently passed her intermediate examination, was alone at home on Thursday evening when a youth from the neighbourhood allegedly entered the house and assaulted her while threatening her with a firearm.

Her father stated that the family had gone to the fields for wheat harvesting and returned around 9 pm, when they heard their daughter crying. On entering the house, they allegedly found a local youth present, armed with a pistol. The family claimed that the accused threatened them with dire consequences if they reported the matter.

Relatives further alleged that the accused’s father later arrived and pressured the family to remain silent, citing “honour.” A family member also claimed that the accused harboured resentment over a past ward commissioner election, believing the victim’s family had not supported him.

According to the family, the girl, deeply distressed after the incident, was consoled and assured that justice would be sought. However, within hours, she took the extreme step. The next morning, when her mother returned home, she found the house locked from inside. Upon looking in, the family discovered the girl had died by hanging.

Police officials confirmed receiving information about the death around 10 am on Friday. Rajgir DSP Sunil Kumar Singh said that officers reached the spot and sent the body to Bihar Sharif Model Hospital for post-mortem examination.

An FSL team has collected evidence from the scene, including clothing and other materials. “The full facts will be clear after the post-mortem and forensic reports. All aspects of the case are being thoroughly investigated,” the officer said.

The victim’s family has alleged that the accused is still at large and has demanded his immediate arrest.
