A shocking incident of violence unfolded in Bihar’s Forbesganj town on Thursday when a roadside vendor allegedly beheaded a pick-up truck driver following a minor argument, only to be later lynched by an enraged mob.
The incident took place around 10 am at Subhash Chowk, nearly 310 km northeast of Patna, triggering panic and tension in the area.
According to police, the accused, Ravi Chauhan (30), a sattu (roasted gram powder) seller from Sultan Pokhar, got into an altercation with Ali Hussain (42), a pick-up truck driver from Amona village under Jogbani police station. The dispute reportedly began when Hussain parked his vehicle in front of Chauhan’s pushcart, obstructing his business.
As the argument escalated, Chauhan allegedly lost control and attacked Hussain with a sharp-edged weapon. Police said the driver sustained fatal injuries during the assault.
Forbesganj Sub-Divisional Police Officer Mukesh Sah said the attacker remained at the spot after the incident, following which an angry crowd gathered and assaulted him. Chauhan later succumbed to injuries inflicted by the mob.
News of the killings spread rapidly, drawing a large number of locals, including relatives of the victim, to the scene. The situation soon turned volatile, with protesters raising slogans, vandalising nearby shops and carts, and blocking roads in the area.
Police teams were deployed to control the situation and restore order. “We are currently engaged in maintaining law and order. A tense crowd is still present at the spot,” an officer said.
Authorities have initiated an investigation into the incident and are working to identify those involved in the mob assault.
