Mirwaiz Umar Farooq claimed on Friday that he has been placed under house arrest by authorities for the third consecutive Friday, restricting him from offering prayers at the historic Jamia Masjid in Srinagar.

Today’s restriction is a continuation of his detention at home, as he has been claiming over the past three weeks.

In his post on X, the Mirwaiz said this was the third consecutive Friday he was barred from leaving his residence.

“Just informed by the police that today again, for the third consecutive Friday, I have been placed under house arrest and will not be allowed to go to Jama Masjid. What law, if laws govern us, sanctions such an assault on basic rights and turns worship into a crime?” he wrote.

He accused the government authorities of continuing to confine him inside his home “at their whim and will,” curbing his freedom and preventing him from fulfilling his religious duties.

“With no accountability for this authoritarian behaviour, week after week, on Fridays or any day they decide, the authorities lock me inside my home. And all those whose duty it is to hold the authorities to account either dare not or bother not to question them, taking a swipe at the NC government,” Mirwaiz added, taking a swipe at the NC government.

He condemned the continuous restriction imposed by the authorities and accused them of showing “contempt for human rights and people’s sentiments.” This sort of authoritarian behavior is not acceptable, he said.
