A crucial piece of evidence — remnants of the bullet are yet to be found in the alleged suicide case of Haryana Assistant Sub-Inspector (ASI) Sandeep Lather. The details of the FIR filed in the case are also yet to be made public by the police.
“Since the ASI allegedly committed suicide in the open fields, standing on the roof of a room built for the tubewell motor, the bullet seems to have been lost in agricultural fields. While we recovered the Khol (cover) of the bullet from the spot, the core pierced through his skull and must have landed somewhere in the fields. There are paddy fields all around. We have deployed people to look for it. We hope to recover soon,” confirmed the Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP), Rohtak city, Gulab Singh, as quoted by a press organisation.
The ASI purportedly committed suicide days after Haryana Inspector General (IG) Y Puran Kumar was found dead. It is to be noted that Lather, in his last video note, levelled corruption allegations against the late IG Puran. These allegations established a link between the two cases, and since then, they have become high-profile.
The body of IPS officer Y Puran Kumar was found with gunshot wounds at his Chandigarh residence on October 7, while Lather’s body was recovered from a field in Rohtak on October 14.
IPS Puran Kumar is a 2001 batch officer. In an eight-page ‘final note’, reportedly written by Puran, he had accused (now on leave), Haryana Director General of Police (DGP) Shatrujeet Kapur, along with other senior IPS officers, of ‘caste-based discrimination, targeted mental harassment, public humiliation, and trying to frame him in a false corruption case’.
ASI Lather had investigated corruption charges against IPS Puran’s Private Security Officer, Head Constable Sushil Kumar. Lather was also involved in the arrest of Sushil. A twist in the cases came when ASI accused IPS Puran of corruption.
It is learnt that the FIR in Lather’s case is not being released due to “some reasons”. At the same time, there are reports that IPS Puran’s wife and his MLA brother are reported to be named in that FIR. No official statement has been made by any police official so far on this.
