Mizoram’s main opposition party, the Mizo National Front (MNF), on Friday retained the Dampa assembly seat in Mamit district, with its candidate R Lalthangliana defeating his nearest rival, Vanlalsailova of the ruling Zoram People’s Movement by a margin of 562 votes, according to the Election Commission of India.
Lalthangliana secured 6,981 votes, which is 40.23 per cent of the total vote share. With 6,419 votes, Vanlalsailova bagged 36.61 per cent of the total polled votes.
The Dampa seat fell vacant following the death of incumbent Mizo National Front (MNF) legislator Lalrintluanga Sailo on July 21.
In Punjab’s Tarn Taran district, the tables turned after AAP candidate, Harmeet Singh Sandhu, started leading against his nearest rival and Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) nominee, Sukhwinder Kaur Randhawa, with a margin of 10,236 votes.
Sandhu bagged 32,520 votes against Randhawa's 22,284 after the 12th round of counting was completed, the Election Commission said.
AAP workers broke into early celebrations, almost certain of their victory in the fierce electoral bout that’s being seen as a litmus test for Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann and the ruling AAP.

The Tarn Taran seat fell vacant after the death of AAP MLA Kashmir Singh Sohal in June.
Meanwhile, Congress candidate Pramod Jain Bhaya was leading Anta assembly constituency in Rajasthan’s Baran district with a margin of 4,989 votes after seven rounds of counting.
Independent candidate Naresh Meena is trailing behind Bhaya, while BJP candidate Morpal Saman is on the third spot.
The bypoll was necessitated after BJP MLA Kanwar Lal Meena was disqualified following his conviction in a criminal case.
In Bihar, NDA has so far emerged as the leading party. According to the latest results on the EC website, Union minister Chirag Paswan’s Lok Janshakti Party (Ram Vilas), a constituent of the NDA, was ahead in 19 of the 28 seats it contested in the state’s assembly elections.
Its candidates were leading in Govindganj, Belsand, Sugauli, Bahadurganj, Kasba, Balrampur, Simri Bakhtiyarpur, Bochahan, Darauli, Mahua, Parbatta, Nathnagar, Fatuha, Dehri, Obra, Sherghati, Bodh Gaya, Rajauli and Gobindpur seats.
Prominent candidates of Paswan’s includ Raju Tiwary, the party’s state unit president, from Govindganj; Amit Kumar from Belsand, Sangita Devi from Balrampur, Baby Kumari from Bochahan, Babu Lal Shorya from Parbatta and Mithun Kumar from Nathnagar.
