The southwest monsoon has entered Jharkhand within its normal onset period, bringing relief from heat and boosting hopes for the farming season.

After a prolonged gap, the southwest monsoon has entered Jharkhand exactly within its normal onset period, bringing relief from the summer heat and raising hopes for the agricultural season. Announcing the arrival of the monsoon in the state on Friday, Senior Meteorological Scientist Abhishek Anand of the Ranchi Meteorological Centre said that monsoon activity had intensified across eastern India over the past few days.

Following its advancement into West Bengal and Bihar on June 11, the southwest monsoon officially entered Jharkhand on Friday.

Anand said meteorologists are closely monitoring weather conditions to determine how quickly the monsoon will spread across the entire state. “The pace at which the monsoon covers Jharkhand will depend on atmospheric conditions over the next two days,” he said.

According to the Ranchi Meteorological Centre, the normal date for the onset of the monsoon in Jharkhand falls between June 10 and June 12.

“This year, the monsoon has arrived within the scheduled time frame,” Anand noted.

The weather office reported that the initial impact of the monsoon has been relatively weak in the northeastern parts of the state, where only light rainfall has been recorded. In contrast, the southeastern region has witnessed good rainfall following the monsoon's arrival.

Officials said the Meteorological Centre is maintaining constant surveillance over the monsoon's progress and rainfall patterns across Jharkhand.

While the state received normal monsoon rainfall last year, meteorologists have forecast below-normal precipitation this season due to the influence of El Niño.

Anand said historical weather patterns indicate that Jharkhand experiences below-normal monsoon rainfall at intervals of three to four years for various climatic reasons.

Given the forecast of deficient rainfall this year, he stressed the need for advance preparedness to mitigate any adverse impact on agriculture and water resources. The weather department will continue to monitor evolving conditions and issue updates on the monsoon's progress in the coming days.
