A severed body of a woman was found near the Hooghly River in north Kolkata on Tuesday morning after two women were caught trying to dispose of a trolley bag containing human remains.
The police arrested the suspects, identified as a mother-daughter duo—Falguni Ghosh and her mother, Arati Ghosh.
Suspicious activity raises alarm
According to police sources, the two women were seen dragging a large suitcase toward Kumartuli Ghat, a busy riverside area, when local residents, who were bathing in the morning, became suspicious. The locals confronted them, but the accused initially claimed they were discarding the carcass of a pet dog. However, when the bag was opened, human body parts were discovered, prompting an immediate police alert.
Shocking discovery and investigation
The victim was later identified as Sumita Ghosh, who was Falguni Ghosh’s aunt-in-law. All three— the suspects and the deceased—were residents of Madhyamgram in North 24 Parganas, a district on the outskirts of Kolkata.
Investigations revealed that the accused transported the dismembered body by local train and then hired a taxi to reach the riverbank, intending to dispose of the remains.
A senior police officer stated, “The mother and daughter have been taken into custody, and further interrogation is underway. The exact motive behind the crime is still unclear.”
The gruesome incident has shocked the city, and authorities are continuing their investigation to determine the reasons behind the murder.
