Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Mohan Yadav on Monday highlighted the state's growing role as a global hub for wildlife tourism. He emphasised that Madhya Pradesh is well-equipped to conserve diverse wildlife within its forests, reinforcing the state's commitment to biodiversity preservation.

In his remarks, Yadav also reiterated the government's decision to grant Madhav National Park in Shivpuri the status of a tiger reserve, a move that would further enhance the state's conservation efforts.

His statement came after the release of 10 gharials (9 females and 1 male) into their natural habitat in the Chambal river from the Deori Gharial Center in Morena.

The Chambal River, home to the world’s highest population of gharials, is a key focal point for conservation. Officials reported that approximately 85 percent of the global gharial population, which totals around 3,000, resides in the Chambal river. This makes the region a critical area for the species' survival.

Speaking about the efforts to promote the region's wildlife tourism, Yadav praised the guidance provided by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in developing tourism in the Morena area.

He described the Chambal Sanctuary as a national treasure, rich in natural wealth, and highlighted the rare species conserved there. However, he also noted that climate change posed a significant threat to these species, calling for enhanced efforts to mitigate its impact.

Madhya Pradesh, a state known for its proactive approach to wildlife conservation, continues to make strides in promoting tourism centered around its rich biodiversity. The government is working on several initiatives to boost wildlife tourism across the state, including the Chambal region, which is home to various endangered species.

During his visit to the National Chambal Gharial Sanctuary in Morena district, the Chief Minister took a closer look at the sanctuary’s management, reviewing the available tourist facilities and observing the gharials in their natural setting. He also toured the Chambal Safari and received updates from the Forest Department on ongoing gharial conservation efforts.

Yadav highlighted that the Chambal Sanctuary not only serves as a haven for gharials but also holds significant potential for dolphin rehabilitation. Efforts to reintroduce and protect dolphins in the region are currently underway through collaboration with the Forest Department, reflecting the state’s broader commitment to conserving its unique wildlife.
