The violence unfolded when members of the Kol tribe allegedly abducted a man, Sunny Dwivedi, accusing him of being responsible for the death of a tribal man, Ashok Kumar, several months ago.
According to police records, Kumar had died in a road accident, but the tribal community suspected Dwivedi’s involvement.
Upon being alerted about Dwivedi’s abduction, a police team led by Shahpur Police Station House Officer Sandeep Bhartiya was dispatched to Gadra village.
However, by the time they arrived, Dwivedi had been beaten to death. As the police attempted to intervene and unlock the room where Dwivedi was held, they were confronted by an armed mob wielding sticks and stones.
In the ensuing violence, ASI Ramcharan Gautam, a member of the Special Armed Force, sustained severe injuries and later succumbed to them during treatment.
Several other police personnel were also injured and were rushed to local hospitals for immediate medical attention.
Following the attack, police resorted to firing shots in the air to disperse the mob and secure their personnel. Investigations are ongoing, and authorities have vowed strict action against those responsible for the attack.
