Collector Ajay Shrivastava and SP Rasna Thakur were transferred following the mob attack that claimed the life of ASI Ramcharan Gautam in Madhya Pradesh's Mauganj district.

The Madhya Pradesh government has transferred the Superintendent of Police (SP) and the Collector of Mauganj district, days after a violent mob attack led to the death of a police assistant sub-inspector (ASI).

The transfer orders were issued late on Tuesday night in the wake of the incident that occurred on 15 March at Gadra village, some 25 km from the district headquarters, where a police team attempting to rescue an abducted man was attacked by a group of tribals, resulting in the death of ASI Ramcharan Gautam.

In a notification issued by the state’s Home Department, Mauganj SP Rasna Thakur has been reassigned as Assistant Inspector General at the police headquarters in Bhopal.

Her post will be taken over by Dilip Kumar Soni, currently serving as SP of the Economic Offences Wing.

Meanwhile, the General Administration Department issued another order transferring Collector Ajay Shrivastava.

Deputy Secretary Sanjay Kumar Jain has been appointed as the new Collector of Mauganj district.

The violence unfolded when members of the Kol tribe allegedly abducted a man, Sunny Dwivedi, accusing him of being responsible for the death of a tribal man, Ashok Kumar, several months ago.

According to police records, Kumar had died in a road accident, but the tribal community suspected Dwivedi’s involvement.

Upon being alerted about Dwivedi’s abduction, a police team led by Shahpur Police Station House Officer Sandeep Bhartiya was dispatched to Gadra village.

However, by the time they arrived, Dwivedi had been beaten to death. As the police attempted to intervene and unlock the room where Dwivedi was held, they were confronted by an armed mob wielding sticks and stones.

In the ensuing violence, ASI Ramcharan Gautam, a member of the Special Armed Force, sustained severe injuries and later succumbed to them during treatment.

Several other police personnel were also injured and were rushed to local hospitals for immediate medical attention.

Following the attack, police resorted to firing shots in the air to disperse the mob and secure their personnel. Investigations are ongoing, and authorities have vowed strict action against those responsible for the attack.
