Chief minister Mamata Banerjee on Monday made serious allegations surrounding the recent unrest in Murshidabad over the issue of amended Waqf Act, calling it a “planned conspiracy” driven by political motives and local provocation.

During her visit to the violence-hit district, Mamata sharply criticised those responsible for the communal tension, accusing them of instigating hatred under the guise of religion and working as “enemies of Bengal.”

Speaking from Behampur on Monday, the chief minister declared that she was personally overseeing the investigation and cross-checking every detail of the incident.

]“This was no spontaneous outburst,” Mamata said, adding, “This was engineered. Two to three people have sparked the chaos. They are trying to disrupt Bengal’s unity. I will soon expose the complete truth.”

Mamata’s comments came during her two-day visit to Murshidabad, where she is scheduled to visit Dhulian, Shamsherganj, and Suti—areas worst hit by the recent clashes. She pointed fingers at an unnamed local organisation, claiming its leader incited the violence and deliberately plunged the area into darkness for 48 hours during the peak of unrest.

“Why were the lights kept off? What were they hiding?” she questioned, hinting at an organised attempt to cover up the perpetrators' actions.

Reinforcing her commitment to communal harmony, Mamata said, “I don’t distinguish people by religion when I sit in this chair. All communities are equal. But those who pretend to be religious leaders and spread lies are the ones creating unrest. They are dangerous. They are shouting ‘tiger, tiger’ to provoke panic where there is none.”

She also took a dig at national commissions that rushed to the scene.

“The Human Rights Commission came the very next day. But where were they when violence broke out in Manipur or Delhi? Why the sudden urgency here? Because this was planned. One community was provoked against another. Bengal will not accept this division,” she said sharply.

The violence claimed three lives, including Hargobind Das and his son Chandan, from Dhulian. Mamata alleged that the family was deliberately hidden and later used for political gain.

“I had planned to give ₹10 lakh each to the families. But now you’re using them against me? You stir up violence, then sling abuse at me? This won’t be tolerated,” she stated.

The chief minister also raised questions about the role of the Border Security Force (BSF), saying, “Why did the BSF open fire that day? Had that not happened, perhaps the next day’s untoward events could have been avoided.”

Turning her ire toward the BJP and the Centre, Mamata accused them of using communal issues to divert attention from national concerns.

Rferring to Pahelgam massacre, she said “Stop playing politics with people’s lives. Look at the border, protect the country and deliver justice to the grieving families. Don’t divide Bengal for your gain. I won’t allow it.”

As investigations continue, Banerjee has made it clear— she sees the Murshidabad unrest not as an accident, but a carefully orchestrated disruption and she intends to expose those behind it
