The Nagaland State Level Education Committee (SLEC) has resolved to implement the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 across both government and private schools from the upcoming academic year, marking a significant reform in the state’s education system.
The decision was finalised during a recent SLEC meeting chaired by Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio, who is also the Minister-in-charge of School Education.
Alongside the NEP rollout, the SLEC outlined plans to consolidate government schools across the state to enhance academic standards. This will involve upgrading, merging, and closing some schools based on enrolment and educational needs.
As part of the reforms, private schools will now be required to obtain prior approval from the Education Department before establishment, and all private institutions must operate under registered societies to ensure compliance with NEP 2020 standards.
The 5+3+3+4 structure recommended by NEP 2020 will also be implemented for government and private schools starting in the 2025 academic year.
Additionally, the SLEC has approved the following:
- Six government middle schools (GMS) in Kohima, Dimapur, and Mon districts will be upgraded to government high schools (GHS).
- A government primary school (GPS) at Ikishe village will be upgraded to a GMS.
- Amalgamation of 16 GMS middle classes with 16 GHS and renaming them as GPS.
- Closure of 17 GPS with zero enrolments in various districts, with teachers redeployed to nearby schools.
The state will also establish a State School Standards Authority (SSSA) and introduce the Nagaland State Quality Assessment and Accreditation Framework (SQAAF), reflecting a commitment to achieving NEP 2020’s goal of equitable and quality education for all.
