Two months after her expulsion from the Punjab Congress, former MLA Navjot Kaur Sidhu has announced the launch of a new political outfit named Bharatiya Rashtrawadi Party.
Kaur, wife of former cricketer and ex-Punjab Congress chief Navjot Singh Sidhu, made the announcement through a post on her social media handle X late on Monday night.
The Punjab Congress had earlier suspended Kaur after her controversial remark alleging that the chief minister’s chair required Rs 500 crore triggered a political row. She was later expelled from the party after repeated criticism of Congress leader Rahul Gandhi and Punjab Congress president Amrinder Singh Raja Warring.
In her post on X, Kaur described the move as a “much-awaited announcement.” She shared a photograph showing her alongside another individual with the banner of the Bharatiya Rashtrawadi Party displayed in the background.
"The much-awaited announcement: We have been working on a new alternative at a national level after carefully monitoring and reviewing the current standards of performance of political leaders," she wrote. She added that the initiative was driven by a desire to dedicate their lives to the country and serve people honestly. Calling it a “divine intervention,” Kaur said like-minded individuals had come together with confidence and determination to work across states with the goal of ensuring justice, peace and service guided by higher values.
Kaur further said she aims to restore Punjab’s “Golden State” status, where people work with a spirit of love, sharing, justice and freedom while pursuing selfless service and spiritual growth without external interference.
She was elected MLA from Amritsar East in 2012 on a BJP ticket and also served as chief parliamentary secretary (health). Kaur joined the Congress along with her husband ahead of the 2017 Punjab Assembly elections.
In recent months, she had openly criticised Warring, accusing him of weakening the party’s state unit and describing him as an ineffective leader.
She also launched sharp attacks on Rahul Gandhi during the ongoing political dispute.
On February 6, Congress general secretary in charge of Punjab Bhupesh Baghel officially announced her expulsion from the party.
