The Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) has suspended investigating officer Akash Rai for his alleged role in the custodial death of BSF jawan Jaswinder Singh alias Sunny from RS Pura, Jammu. The official added that a departmental inquiry has also been initiated.
“The officer has been terminated until the investigation into the custodial torture allegations is completed,” an NCB official said.
“NCB is a responsible force, and we want the probe to be impartial,” he said.
According to officials, allegations of spying were also reported in the case; however, the investigation report clarified that Constable Jaswinder was arrested in connection with a drug seizure case.
The post-mortem report, which suggested 34 injury marks, went viral on Wednesday. The autopsy revealed that the jawan’s intimate parts were also tortured, lending strong support to the family’s allegations of “brutal” custodial torture.
While the autopsy showed multiple injuries on the jawan’s body, the exact cause of death has been withheld pending the chemical examiner’s report from Kharar and histopathology findings from Government Medical College, Amritsar.
The constable was arrested by the NCB on March 3 near Miran Sahib Chowk while he was returning to his village, Diwangarh, close to the International Border.
He was with his mother after getting medicines for her and was on leave from his posting in Tripura at the time. The jawan was picked up due to his Brother Pupinder Singh’s involvement in an earlier case registered under the NDPS Act.
The family said Jaswinder was falsely implicated. A Jammu court discharged him from the case on March 9, a week after his arrest. Jaswinder had reportedly died in NCB custody on March 30.
