The Himachal Pradesh High Court on Friday granted bail to Assistant Sub-Inspector Pankaj Sharma, who was accused of tampering with crucial evidence in the case related to the death of Vimal Negi, a former Chief Engineer of the Himachal Pradesh Power Corporation Limited (HPPCL).

Negi had gone missing on March 10 this year and was found dead eight days later, on March 18, in Bilaspur district.

Sharma was the first officer to recover a pen drive and other important documents belonging to Negi. A single bench of Justice Virender Singh heard Sharma’s plea and granted him bail on Friday.
During the hearing, the CBI opposed the bail plea, saying Sharma’s custody was necessary for the ongoing investigation.

However, Sharma’s lawyer argued that there was no need to keep him in judicial custody since he had already shared all required information with the CBI.
After listening to both sides, the court decided to grant bail to Sharma.

The CBI had nabbed Sharma on September 14, 2025, for allegedly hiding and tampering with the contents of the pen drive he recovered from Negi’s body. He was later produced before a Special CBI Court, which sent him to judicial custody.

Sharma later challenged that decision in the High Court.
