The new West Bengal government's long-awaited cabinet expansion is expected to take place on Monday at Raj Bhavan, a move that would complete the formation of the state ministry nearly a month after the change in government.

At present, the administration is functioning with a small council of ministers, with only five ministers sworn in alongside Chief Minister Dilip Ghosh. The limited strength of the ministry has meant that several ministers have been handling multiple departments while a full cabinet is awaited.

According to sources, the expansion is likely to bring the total strength of the ministry to around 33 members. Preparations for the swearing-in ceremony are
reportedly underway, although an official announcement is yet to be made.

Political circles have been rife with speculation over the names likely to find a place in the expanded ministry. Party insiders indicated that the leadership has sought to strike a balance between experience, regional representation and social diversity while finalising the list.

Among the names being widely discussed is veteran BJP leader Swapan Dasgupta, who is expected to be entrusted with the education portfolio. Sources said Dasgupta has already been involved in preliminary work related to the department and is considered a frontrunner for the post of education minister.

Another prominent contender is Tapas Roy, who played an important role during the legislative transition and is believed to be in line for a senior cabinet berth.

Several other legislators are also being considered for induction, including Shankar Ghosh, Rudranil Ghosh, Roopa Ganguly, Ashok Dinda and others. However, it remains unclear who among them may receive Cabinet rank and who may be appointed Ministers of State.

Currently, key portfolios are being overseen by ministers including Agnimitra Paul, Nishith Pramanik, Ashok Kirtania and Khudiram Tudu.

The expansion is expected to fill all remaining vacancies and provide dedicated ministerial leadership to departments that are currently without full-time heads. The final allocation of portfolios is likely to be announced after the swearing-in ceremony.
