The Lieutenant Governor of the Jammu and Kashmir Manoj Sinha on Friday assigned portfolios to newly inducted ministers, with Deputy Chief Minister Surinder Kumar Choudhary given the charge of public works (R&B), industries and commerce, mining, labour, employment and skill development.
Sakina Masood Itoo will look after health and medical education, school education, higher education, and social welfare.
Javed Rana has been assigned the portfolios of jal shakti (erstwhile PHE), forest, ecology, and environment and tribal affairs.
Javid Ahmad Dar has been assigned agriculture production, rural development and panchayati raj, cooperative, and election.
Satish Sharma has been assigned food, civil supplies and consumer affairs, transport, science and technology, information technology, youth services and sports, and ARI and training.
The departments not allotted to any ministers will remain with Chief Minister Omar Abdullah as per the official order.
His National Conference (NC) won 42 seats and became the single largest party in the UT, followed by the BJP with 29 seats.
NC's ally the Congress only managed to win six seats. Although it is still playing an important role in the new government.
Jammu and Kashmir has an elected government after a gap of six years since the UT’s status was changed to Union Territory in 2019 by the Central government.
