The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has stepped up preparations to deal with the monsoon across Himachal Pradesh. It has put several preventive measures in place to ensure traffic movement remains safe and road connectivity is maintained during the rainy season.
In a statement issued, NHAI on Thursday said it has identified landslide-prone and other vulnerable locations through detailed surveys. These include areas at risk of slope failure, flooding and debris accumulation. Preventive works have been taken up on a priority basis to reduce the chances of road disruptions.
The authority said several engineering measures have been completed at critical spots. These include slope stabilisation, hill protection works, retaining walls, better drainage systems and anti-erosion measures to make the highways more resilient during heavy rain.
NHAI said special attention has been given to highway stretches that suffered extensive damage during previous monsoons. Along with immediate protection work, it is also planning permanent solutions such as construction of bridges and other protective structures to improve the stability of these vulnerable sections.
Keeping in mind the difficult Himalayan terrain, NHAI has strengthened its monitoring and emergency response system. Machinery, technical experts, field staff and emergency equipment have been deployed at sensitive locations so that traffic can be restored quickly in case of landslides or other weather-related incidents. Monitoring will continue throughout the monsoon season.
The authority said it is working closely with the district administration, police, disaster management authorities and other departments to ensure quick action whenever emergencies affect National Highways.
NHAI also advised commuters to drive carefully during heavy rain and follow all traffic advisories issued by the authorities for their safety.
The authority appealed to road users to immediately report accidents, landslides, road blockages or any other emergency on National Highways by calling the NHAI helpline 1033. People can also contact the local police, district administration or the concerned project control room for immediate assistance.
