Jammu and Kashmir Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha on Tuesday welcomed Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways Nitin Gadkari upon his arrival in Srinagar. The minister is scheduled to witness a major breakthrough at the strategically important Zojila Tunnel later today.
In a post on X, the Lieutenant Governor said he had the privilege of receiving the Union Minister in the summer capital of Jammu and Kashmir.
Gadkari's visit holds significance as several key infrastructure projects, including major highways and tunnel initiatives aimed at improving connectivity in the region, are expected to be reviewed during his stay.
The visit comes as the Centre accelerates efforts to boost road infrastructure across Jammu and Kashmir, with an emphasis on improving mobility, reducing travel time and promoting overall economic growth.
Jammu and Kashmir has witnessed a significant infrastructure push in the past four to five years, with major investment projects in roads, tunnels, railways, healthcare and other sectors.
However, despite the increased focus on development and rising tourist footfall, the region continues to grapple with challenges such as unemployment and drug issues affecting the youth.
The Union Territory has been without statehood since August 2019, when the Centre revoked the special status of the erstwhile state of Jammu and Kashmir and reorganised it into a Union Territory.
The Central government, including Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah, had promised to restore statehood at the earliest.
