Members of the Mahila Congress staged a protest outside the Odisha Assembly on Wednesday to demonstrate against what they called "rising atrocities against women" in the state.
Led by its state president, Minakshi Bahinipati, the women's wing of the Congress party organised a march towards the assembly building, holding flags, leaflets, and banners. However, police personnel prevented the activists from moving closer to the assembly by blocking their path with barricades, and some of the protesters were subsequently detained.
She said that rape, murder, and other crimes against women are on the rise and that the Bharatiya Janata Party-led state government "is a mute spectator."
Citing the recent murder of a woman police constable in the capital, she said that if this is the situation in Bhubaneswar, one can assume the conditions in other parts of the state. Congress MLA Taraprasad Bahinipati added that the government had "failed to ensure a safe and secure environment for women" and had not taken any concrete steps to improve the situation despite the rising crime rates.
AICC leader Tulika Karma confirmed that the party would continue its fight for the safety of women in Odisha.
