Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah on Friday strongly criticised the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) for allegedly misleading the public over the Urdu language row, asserting that no decision has been taken by the National Conference government to drop Urdu.

Speaking to reporters, Omar clarified that while a proposal on the issue had been received from the concerned department, it was still pending approval and no final decision had been made.

“The file is still on the table. I have not approved it,” he said, adding that the government had only sought public feedback on the matter and had taken no decision so far. He accused the PDP of deliberately misinterpreting an order that merely invited public comments on the issue for narrow political gains.

“There is a difference between seeking people’s comments and passing an order to drop a subject. We are elected by the people, and our first priority is to seek their feedback on issues that may affect them,” Omar said.

Taking a sharp swipe at the PDP, the Chief Minister alleged that the party was raising the Urdu issue to divert public attention from its own past actions, particularly its alliance with the BJP.

“They are talking about Urdu so that people do not focus on other developments. If there is any order dropping Urdu, they should produce it,” he challenged.

Omar further said the current political situation in Jammu and Kashmir was a direct result of the PDP-BJP alliance formed after the 2014 elections. “It was the PDP that first allowed the BJP to enter into a political alliance. What happened after 2018 is before everyone,” he added.
