Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah is expected to review the operations of the Gulmarg Gondola (cable car) as it resumes services weeks after a major accident, officials said.

MLA Gulmarg Pirzada Farooq Ahmed Shah said on Thursday that Gondola operations are set to resume this afternoon. He said “The Gulmarg Gondola will resume operations this afternoon,” adding, “The Chief Minister will also visit the world-famous tourist resort later today.”

Earlier, on May 25, around 300 tourists were trapped after gondola operations suddenly came to a halt at an altitude between 13,054 ft and 13,780 ft.

Authorities had to carry out a multi-agency rescue operation to safely evacuate the passengers, which lasted several hours.

More than 65 cabins were stuck after a technical glitch halted operations of Asia’s highest cable car service, used by tourists visiting the Apharwat Mountains. The situation worsened when the weather turned unfavorable, with strong winds causing the cabins to sway dangerously and leaving tourists terrified.

Meanwhile, Jammu and Kashmir Police later announced awards for police personnel and volunteers involved in the rescue operation, who saved many people despite inclement weather.
