Union Minister Ravneet Singh Bittu on Thursday attacked the AAP government, alleging that the law and order situation in Punjab had worsened. He claimed that when the BJP comes to power in the state in 2027, gangsters will disappear and strict action will be taken against hardened criminals.
Bittu cited BJP-ruled Uttar Pradesh as an example. He asked whether anyone there would say that gangsters still operate openly. He made these remarks while speaking at an event held to mark the birth anniversary of former Punjab Chief Minister Beant Singh.
Referring to the recent killing of an AAP sarpanch in Tarn Taran, Bittu expressed concern over the state’s law and order situation. He questioned the AAP government’s ability to ensure security. “The way the sarpanch was killed raises serious questions about the current situation in Punjab. I do not think this government can take effective action,” he said.
He also criticised the state government for allegedly reacting by suspending police officers out of frustration. “How is it possible for criminals to enter a wedding venue and commit murder?” he asked.
AAP sarpanch Harbarinder Singh was shot dead by two unknown attackers during a wedding function in Tarn Taran district on Wednesday. The incident took place nearly a month after another sarpanch and AAP leader, Jharmal Singh of Valtoha village in Amritsar district, was shot dead during a wedding function.
“Within six months of taking office, if even a single gunshot is heard, we will take full responsibility,” he said. He alleged that firing incidents are taking place almost daily in the state. He hailed the BJP-led government for ending terrorism in Jammu and Kashmir and said a similar strategy would wipe out gangsters in Punjab by 2027.
"People now recognise that there is a peaceful atmosphere in Bihar and Uttar Pradesh because of a double-engine government. In Uttar Pradesh, can anyone claim that gangsters exist or that drugs are being sold? In Bihar, can anyone assert that gangsters are present or that drug sales are rampant?" Bittu asked. On the Punjab Police’s ongoing action against gangsters, Bittu described it as mere 'spectacle' and 'dramebazi'.
When asked about the Punjab Congress, Bittu alleged that the party had reached a 'compromise' with the AAP government. He said there was little hope of any meaningful opposition from them.
