A young man was killed and another critically injured after unknown assailants opened fire on them while they were on their way to a hospital in Jalandhar.
Initial probe indicate that the incident was linked to a dispute that began on June 11.
Bhargav Camp police station SHO Rajinder Singh, who reached the spot after the shooting, said five to seven people were involved in the attack. Police have identified some suspects and expect arrests soon.
As per local residents, the conflict started on June 11 when Rahul, alias Kalu, and a few of his associates reportedly assaulted Simarjeet Singh, also known as Pappu, following an argument. Simarjeet, 24, worked as an electrician in the area.
The next day, family members and friends were taking Simarjeet to a hospital for treatment when the accused allegedly intercepted them on the way. Eyewitnesses claimed that Gullu and several of his associates had already positioned themselves near the route. As the victims arrived, the attackers stopped them and allegedly began firing.
Simarjeet was struck by a bullet and suffered serious injuries. He was rushed to the Civil Hospital, where doctors declared him dead. Another youth, Rajveer, 23, who was present with the group, was also hit during the attack and sustained critical injuries. After the shooting, the assailants fled the spot.
Following the incident, SHO Rajinder Singh and other police personnel reached the area and launched an investigation. The crime scene was examined and the injured victim was shifted to a nearby hospital for treatment.
An Assistant Deputy Commissioner of Police (ADCP) also briefly visited the spot after the incident. However, despite the shooting taking place within his jurisdiction, he did not make any public statement regarding the case.
