Wildlife authorities in Jammu and Kashmir’s Doda district successfully captured a leopard on Thursday, while search continues for the second big cat in the area, officials said.
The two spotted animals had been causing panic in the residential areas of the district for days, following which the wildlife department launched the operation to capture them for public safety.
“We intensified the operation keeping public safety in mind. The team successfully captured one of the leopards today. Efforts are on to capture the other,” wildlife official, Manohar Lal, told reporters.
He said the captured leopard has been relocated to Kishtwar.

Meanwhile, authorities have urged people to remain vigilant due to the presence of wild animals in the area.
Interestingly, a three-year camera-trapping study conducted by the Nature Conservation Foundation (NCF) and Wildlife Protection Department of Jammu & Kashmir between 2022 and 2025 across the Kishtwar Himalayas confirmed the presence of snow leopards throughout the year in the Union Territory.
In 2024-25 though, the elusive cats were recorded during winter months in both Paddar (Jammu division) and Zojila (Kashmir division). Camera traps also captured both snow leopards and common leopards at the same locations.
