In a step towards rehabilitation and skill promotion, products made by prisoners in Himachal Pradesh will be sold on Flipkart’s online platform under an MoU signed with the state prison department, a release said on Wednesday. Products range from handicrafts, handmade clothing to furniture and other items.

The Himkara Unnayan Samiti, functioning under the Himachal Pradesh Department of Prisons and Correctional Services, has signed an MoU with Flipkart to facilitate the online sale of these products, the release added.

Support will also be provided for packaging, branding and logistics to ensure that the products meet market standards and remain competitive. Officials said the agreement marks an important step towards rehabilitation, skill development and financial empowerment of prisoners.

Prisoners will receive training aligned with current market demands so they can learn new skills and explore better self-employment opportunities once they complete their sentences.

Himachal Pradesh’s prisons, at present, house nearly 3,000 inmates, including about 1,000 convicted prisoners and 2,000 undertrials. The Department of Prisons and Correctional Services said the initiative is a major step towards bringing positive change in prisoners’ lives and helping them become self-reliant and responsible members of society.
