The process of nominations for the forthcoming three-tier panchayat elections in Uttarakhand ended peacefully with more than 63,000 nominations filed from all over the state, except for Haridwar district.
A total of 63,812 nomination papers were submitted between July 2 and July 5, four days given to submit the nomination papers, as per the data released by the State Election Commission on Sunday. It reflected a good public turnout of people for grassroots democracy. The last day of filing nominations witnessed high activity, with 31,622 candidates submitting their papers, which resulted in huge crowds at nomination centers in many districts.
According to official statistics, 1,907 nominations for 358 district panchayat member seats and 11,629 nominations for 2,974 seats for block panchayat members were filed. For the position of gram pradhan (village head), 22,028 nominations were filed against 7,499 vacancies. And 28,248 nominations were filed for 55,587 gram panchayat member seats.

As the nomination process is over, papers will be scrutinised by July 9. The candidates who want to withdraw their nominations can do so on July 10 and 11.
The State Election Commission, in a statement, added that it is working to hold free, fair, and transparent panchayat elections in the state.
"The large number of nominations is indicative of enhanced civic awareness and participation prior to this important democratic exercise at the grassroots level," said Rahul Kumar Goyal, secretary of the State Election Commission.
