818 candidates file 1,391 nominations for Assam polls; EC boosts voter outreach via SVEEP, mascots and public figures ahead of elections.

As the nomination period for the Assam Assembly Elections concluded, a total of 818 candidates filed 1,391 nomination papers across all 126 constituencies in Assam, according to provisional data released by the officials on Monday.

Authorities noted that the figures are subject to final verification. The scrutiny of nomination papers is scheduled for March 24, while March 26 has been set as the last date for withdrawal of candidature.

Parallel to the nomination process, the Office of the Chief Electoral Officer has intensified voter outreach under the Systematic Voters’ Education and Electoral Participation (SVEEP) programme. The initiative aims to enhance voter awareness and encourage higher participation by educating citizens about their democratic rights and responsibilities.

In a move to ensure free and fair elections, the Election Commission of India has appointed Manjeet Singh (Retd.) as Special Observer for the polls. Officials stated that stakeholders can approach the observer directly between 11 am and 5 pm with any complaints or concerns related to the electoral process.

To further strengthen grassroots engagement, district administrations have introduced locally themed mascots, including ‘Bakhar’ in Lakhimpur, ‘Ganabandhu’ in Sonitpur, ‘Jolou’ in Jorhat, ‘Chameli’ in Golaghat, and ‘Dwimlu’ and ‘Sikhiri’ in Kokrajhar. These mascots are aimed at reaching diverse voter groups, particularly in rural and semi-urban areas.

The campaign has also enlisted public figures to expand its outreach. Digital creator Abhinav Bora, popularly known as “LazyGuy,” has been appointed as the district icon for Jorhat, while actor Rajiv Duwari is leading awareness initiatives in Lakhimpur.

Additionally, State SVEEP Icon and para-cyclist Rakesh Banik have been visiting multiple districts to promote voter participation, highlighting the poll panel’s focus on inclusivity and accessibility.

With preparations in full swing, the Election Commission of India continues to push for greater civic engagement ahead of the upcoming elections.
