All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) president Asaduddin Owaisi on Monday stated that his party remains open to political alliances aimed at preventing the Bharatiya Janata Party from returning to power in the 2027 Uttar Pradesh Assembly elections. Speaking to the media, Owaisi clarified that whilst he is prepared to partner with other opposition groups, any such arrangement must be built on a foundation of mutual respect and fair representation. The key focus was that if AIMIM was accorded due respect, AIMIM would readily agree to come together in an alliance to prevent the BJP from coming to power.

The AIMIM had already fought in Uttar Pradesh in the 2024 Lok Sabha polls along with Apna Dal (Kamerawadi). Interestingly, in his recent speech, Owaisi didn’t name any particular alliance or alliance partner, which has set off speculations that AIMIM may be considering aligning itself with the opposition INDIA front. Another key development to watch ahead of the 2027 polls will be the strategy adopted by Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) chief Mayawati. Should the BSP decide to contest independently, AIMIM may well explore the potential of forging an alliance with her party.

Meanwhile, Owaisi formally declared the party's Uttar Pradesh state president, Shaukat Ali, as the candidate for the Matera Assembly constituency on Sunday, a seat currently held by a Samajwadi Party MLA. Addressing a large public gathering in Matera, the AIMIM chief made it clear that his party would not accept a secondary or subordinate role in any opposition coalition, stressing that future discussions must centre on genuine political representation and power-sharing. He stated that whilst they are ready to unite to defeat the BJP, the partnership must be based on equality, adding that AIMIM will no longer accept being treated as a minor player used merely to lay the groundwork for others.
