Heavy rain has led to flood-like conditions in Gaggomahal village and surrounding areas of Punjab. Farmers have blamed the local administration for failing to take timely steps to control the waterlogging. The allegations were raised by the Bharatiya Kisan Union (Ekta Sangharsh), Punjab.
BKU Ekta Sangharsh Punjab president Palwinder Singh Mahal said continuous rain has flooded roads, farmland and some residential areas, creating problems for residents. The farmers' group said the Dera Baba Nanak-Amritsar road and several connecting roads are also under water, affecting traffic in the area.
The union said large areas of standing paddy have been submerged, raising concerns about heavy losses for farmers. Palwinder Singh Mahal alleged that the problem became worse because drains were not cleared before the monsoon. He also claimed that vegetation around bridges was not removed, blocking the normal flow of rainwater.
The farmers' organisation claimed that no relief teams, JCB machines or senior officials had reached the affected villages despite the worsening situation. It said local residents were trying to remove the water themselves, while government agencies had not taken effective action. These claims were made by the farmers' union.
BKU Ekta Sangharsh has appealed to the Punjab Government and district administration to take immediate steps to help people in the affected areas.
The union has called for machinery to be deployed to clear the accumulated water. It has also sought a special assessment of crop losses, proper compensation for affected farmers and action against officials found responsible for negligence.
