On the eve of Captain Vikram Batra’s death anniversary, residents of Palampur came together in solemn remembrance to honour Kargil war hero and brave son from the state, whose bravery during the 1999 war continues to inspire the nation.
A garlanding ceremony led by Palampur Mayor Gopal Nag was held at Capt Batra’s statue near the PWD Rest House. Local residents, students, ex-servicemen, and officials came together in a moment of deep respect and gratitude and paid homage to Capt Vikram Batra whose courage has become a part of India’s legacy.
Across town, commemorative events were held — from Capt Vikram Batra Degree College to the local Army cantonment —echoing the spirit of the soldier who once famously said, "Yeh dil maange more."
Posthumously awarded the Param Vir Chakra, the nation’s highest military honour, Capt Batra remains one of the most celebrated heroes of the Kargil conflict. He had personally neutralised the enemy soldiers in a daring fight. His displayed fearless leadership in capturing Point 5140 and later, during the intense battle at Point 4875, where he eliminated five enemy soldiers and made the ultimate sacrifice.
Today, his name lives on in more than just memory. Military institutions across the country honour his legacy — from the Vikram Batra Block in Allahabad’s Service Selection Centre, to Captain Vikram Batra Enclave in Jabalpur, and the Vikram Batra Mess at the Indian Military Academy.
As the sun set over Palampur, floral tributes and silent prayers reminded everyone that Capt Vikram Batra’s story is not just one of war, but of unwavering love for the country — a legacy that will live on for generations to come.
