Jammu and Kashmir People's Democratic Party (PDP) chief Mehbooba Mufti on Tuesday alleged that leaders and workers of her party across the Kashmir Valley were placed under house arrest to prevent them from joining protests against the outsourcing of government jobs.
In a post on X, she said the National Conference (NC) government was adopting a selective approach by claiming it had no control over the police whenever questions of accountability were raised.
"The NC government repeatedly hides behind the excuse that the Police Department is beyond its control whenever questions of accountability arise. Yet, whenever young people peacefully raise their voices for justice, be it over the rationalisation of reservations or opposition to backdoor appointments, the same government functions in complete coordination with the police to crush every democratic expression of dissent," she further wrote.
She alleged that the government's hypocrisy stood fully exposed, claiming that PDP leaders and workers across the Valley were subjected to restrictions and effectively placed under house arrest just because they wanted to participate in peaceful protests against the government's discriminatory policies.
"The selective victimisation exposes their duplicity clearly in front of the public, where on one side they claim to have no control over the police yet somehow manage to restrict all PDP cadre to homes," she alleged.
Earlier in the day, the PDP alleged that its Baramulla district president, Mohammad Rafique Rather, was placed under house arrest ahead of the party’s proposed district-level protest.
The party had announced protests at district headquarters across Jammu and Kashmir against alleged irregularities in the selection of candidates in government jobs.
There was no immediate response from the administration or the police to the PDP's allegations.
