The Assembly did not take up the resolution seeking the restoration of the J&K Waqf Board and its custodianship under the Muttahid-e-Majlis-e-Ulema, said People’s Democratic Party (PDP) youth leader and MLA Pulwama Waheed Parra on Thursday.
In his post on X, Parra said that the resolution was dropped during the Assembly ballot.
He added that the matter would be formally brought to the attention of Speaker Abdul Rahim Rather, requesting him to use his discretion to include it in the House’s legislative business. Waqf Board is a sensitive, faith-linked institution, and it argued that the matter requires discussion in the Legislative Assembly.
The PDP lawmaker highlighted the need to return the custodianship of the board to local religious leadership under Mirwaiz Umar Farooq.
Earlier in April, the speaker of the house disallowed the discussion on the Waqf (Amendment) Act, 2025, in the Jammu and Kashmir Legislative Assembly. Rather said, the matter was sub judice, or under judicial review by the Supreme Court. The decision to drop the bill introduced by Waheed Parra caused major disruptions in the House, with protesting MLAs demanding a debate on the controversial law.
The bill is likely to be reintroduced by the PDP lawmaker, with the possibility of triggering uproar and disruptions in the nine-day autumn Assembly Session, which began on Thursday.
The ongoing Assembly session is expected to be a bumpy ride, with leaders demanding discussions on Israel’s war on Gaza and the killing of civilians, followed by discussions on the detention of Mehraj Malik, and Reintroduction of the Waqf bill.
