Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha said on Friday that some people were trying to mislead the public in Jammu and Kashmir over the issue of statehood restoration, despite the clarity already given by Union Home Minister Amit Shah.

Addressing a gathering at SKICC in Srinagar, Sinha said the Home Minister had already revealed the sequence in which political rights would be extended to the Union Territory (UT) in a phased manner.

He added that assurances had already been given by Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s government.

“Some people are trying to mislead the public on this issue. I want to make it clear that the Union Territory government already has sufficient powers and those powers must be utilised for public welfare instead of spreading confusion,” he said.

The LG also said six years ago, under the leadership of Prime Minister Modi, history was made when, for the first time, the laws framed by the Indian Parliament became applicable in J&K.

“If we turn back to the past seven decades of history, many people made sacrifices to see that change. The foundation of this journey was laid by the late Sardar Patel,” the LG said.

He said, “Not even the President of India had any authority over an inch of land in Jammu and Kashmir. Only a handful of individuals ruled the place while depriving thousands.”

Sinha said October 31 was the day when the walls of separatism began to crumble in the UT.

“J&K Police and security forces have broken the backbone of terrorism. The era of fear is over. People now participate freely in Lok Sabha and Assembly elections, strengthening democracy in the Union Territory,” he said.

The LG said that the new generation has rejected violence. “Stone pelting has become history. People are now coming out spontaneously in support of peace and progress,” he remarked.
