A 55-year-old Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) died on Tuesday after his service revolver accidentally went off at the Police Quarters here, police said.
The incident occurred when DSP Yogesh Kumar Sharma was cleaning his weapon at his official residence near GN College on the Phagwara bypass Gaunspur service road. In the process, a shot was accidentally fired from the revolver, critically injuring him, officials said. He was immediately rushed to Civil Hospital, Phagwara, where doctors declared him brought dead, police added.
Sharma had earlier served in the Anti-Narcotics Task Force and was recently transferred to Chandigarh.
Superintendent of Police, Phagwara, Madhvi Sharma said the bullet struck the DSP in the chest, leading to his death.
