Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday extended warm birthday greetings to Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah, who turned 56 today. In a message posted on X, PM Modi wrote, "Greetings to Jammu and Kashmir CM Shri Omar Abdullah Ji on his birthday. May he be blessed with a long life and wonderful health.”
Omar Abdullah, who is serving his second term as Chief Minister, holds the unique distinction of having led Jammu and Kashmir both as a full-fledged state (2009–2015) and as a Union Territory following its bifurcation in 2019.
After securing a landslide victory for the National Conference in the 2024 assembly elections, Omar has been navigating the limited powers of a UT while aggressively pushing for the restoration of full statehood.
Despite the constraints, he has focused on accelerating development in Jammu and Kashmir after six years of Central rule, prioritising infrastructure projects, trade and industrial promotion, skill development, tourism revival, and the establishment of new institutions.
Key initiatives under his leadership include setting up a new law university, additional medical colleges, and strengthening the overall administrative and educational framework of the UT.
However, Omar also faces significant challenges, including a persistently high unemployment rate in Jammu and Kashmir—currently over 6.50 per cent—compared to the national average of around 3 per cent.
