In a significant operation against counterfeit currency circulation, police in Naharlagun, Arunachal Pradesh, arrested four persons and seized fake notes with a total face value of ₹1.12 lakh, officials said on Saturday.
The case came to light on December 2 when two suspects attempted to buy groceries in the Polo Colony area using counterfeit ₹500 notes. After the shopkeeper identified the notes as fake, the duo fled, prompting an immediate police investigation.
Naharlagun Superintendent of Police Nyelam Nega said that based on intelligence inputs, one accused from Gohpur in Itanagar was arrested first. His interrogation led the police to multiple locations across the region.
Under the supervision of SDPO Rishi Longdo, the police raided several spots, arresting another suspect from Amba in Doimukh, followed by two alleged suppliers from Assam.
“In total, 224 counterfeit ₹500 notes, amounting to ₹1,12,000, were seized,” SP Nega confirmed.
He urged citizens to stay vigilant and promptly report any suspicious currency, particularly amid the ongoing local body elections, when the circulation of fake notes tends to spike.
