The election for the posts of Senior Deputy Mayor and Deputy Mayor in the Municipal Corporation of Gurugram (MCG), which was set for August 11, has been postponed until further notice. MC Commissioner Pradeep Dahiya said the new date will be announced soon, citing administrative reasons.

It has been five months since the MCG mayoral elections took place. Just last week, the Manesar Municipal Corporation held its elections for the post of Deputy and Senior Deputy Mayor, which turned into another chapter of the political rivalry between the Rao Narbir and Rao Inderjit camps.

In Manesar, after dramatic political moves, including an “anti-horse trading” trip to Nepal, Narbir’s candidates won both posts, while councillors from Inderjit’s side, including the Mayor, stayed away from the election.

Now, both camps are facing each again in Gurugram. Sources say the main reason behind postponing the MC poll is due to a lack of agreement on candidate names within the party.

In March, the BJP won 24 of the 36 seats in the MCG polls, securing a majority for the first time. With expected support from four or five Independent councillors, the majority could go up to 29.

A senior party leader from Chandigarh said, "The party is yet to finalise the names. It is for unanimous elections to keep all united. However, if both camps don't agree, it may come down to voting.”

“It was BJP candidates who won the Manesar MC posts, and BJP candidates will also win the MCG election. The party is united,” claimed state minister Rao Narbir.
