On the second day of her Jharkhand visit, President Droupadi Murmu arrived at Karandih in Jamshedpur, Jharkhand, where she participated in traditional rituals at the Jaherthan and took part in ceremonies in accordance with local customs. The President later attended the concluding centenary of the centenary celebrations marking 100 years of the Ol Chiki script, the writing system of the Santhali language.
Addressing the gathering, she lauded the sustained efforts made to develop the Ol Chiki script and to give due recognition to the Santhali language, which is spoken by millions across eastern India.
In a deeply emotional moment, President Murmu sang a prayer song in Santhali and invoked Jaher Mata, praying for guidance along the path of light and righteousness. Her gesture resonated strongly with the audience, many of whom described the moment as moving and memorable.
During the ceremony, the President honoured 12 individuals for their significant contributions towards the promotion, preservation and development of the Santhali language and the Ol Chiki script.
Emphasising linguistic inclusivity, she said that not only Ol Chiki but also other languages that have remained on the margins must receive equal opportunities for growth and development.
Jharkhand Governor Santosh Kumar Gangwar and Chief Minister Hemant Soren were also present on the occasion. Addressing the gathering, Governor Gangwar said that the doors of Raj Bhavan are always open to the common people and reaffirmed the institution’s commitment to supporting tribal welfare and development.
Chief Minister Hemant Soren, in his address, stressed the importance of preserving language and culture, stating that safeguarding indigenous heritage is essential for maintaining social identity and passing traditions on to future generations.
People present at the ceremony said that the President’s Santhali prayer song left the audience deeply moved. The event not only highlighted the cultural and linguistic significance of the Santhali language and the Ol Chiki script but also sent a strong message to the younger generation about staying connected to their cultural roots.
