Due to heavy deployment of police and reserve forces, the protest outside the Panjab University Vice Chancellor’s office witnessed limited participation on Wednesday. Protesters continued to demand notification of the Senate elections.

With the main attention shifting to the Dussehra Ground in Sector 43, where Punjab-based farmers’ unions are holding a large gathering, the protest on the university campus is seeing a weak response at the moment.

Demonstrators said representatives of the farmers’ union would reach the PU campus around 1 pm and address the gathering there as well.

Meanwhile, farmers from across Punjab, under the banner of the Samyukta Kisan Morcha (SKM), have started reaching at the Dussehra Ground in Sector 43, Chandigarh, to push for their major demands. A stage is being prepared for their address.

Senior SKM leaders, including Harmeet Singh Qadian, Harinder Singh Lakhowal, Ravneet Singh, and Raminder Singh Patiala, have reached the venue. Langar sewa has also begun for the demonstrators.

With thousands of farmers expected to join, security in and around Sector 43 has been tightened. A heavy police deployment has been put in place to maintain law and order and prevent any untoward incidents.

Farmers are mainly protesting against the proposed Electricity (Amendment) Bill 2025, which they say puts their existing protections and benefits at risk.

They are also seeking proper compensation and relief for farmers affected by the recent floods in Punjab. They say crop and property losses have still not been fully addressed by the government.

The PU Bachao Morcha, supported by over 50 student unions, farmer groups, social organisations, and employee bodies, has called for a complete campus bandh on Wednesday. This is similar to the November 10 protest that saw violent scenes at the university.

The university had also announced a holiday, and all departments are closed. The administration block is heavily guarded by police, and the campus markets are also shut.
