The Punjab State Power Corporation Limited (PSPCL) has established a dedicated control room aimed at preventing fire incidents during the ongoing wheat harvesting season.

Power Minister Harbhajan Singh, in an official statement, said that this initiative has been taken to address emergencies arising from low-hanging or loose electric wires, which can create sparks and potentially lead to fires in wheat fields.

Farmers have been urged to promptly report any such electrical hazards to the nearest sub-divisional office, complaint centre, or the newly established control room. To ensure timely action, PSPCL has provided contact numbers — 96461-06835, 96461-06836, and the toll-free number 1912 — for lodging complaints or reporting emergencies.

In addition to phone calls, farmers can also send photographs of low-hanging wires, loose connections, or sparking incidents via WhatsApp to 96461-06836, along with location details, to help authorities act swiftly.

Minister Harbhajan Singh also advised farmers to avoid stacking harvested wheat under power lines or near transformers, emphasizing the risk of fire. He strongly cautioned against smoking cigarettes or beedis in or around wheat fields, given the heightened fire risk during this season.

He further recommended that farmers operate harvester combine machines only during daylight hours and remain alert for any sparks or malfunctions while harvesting. The wheat procurement season officially began on April 1, and Punjab has set a procurement target of 124 lakh metric tonnes this year.
